This Double-crested Cormorant has been a recent visitor to the Druid Ridge Lake. Cormorants often stand in the sun with their wings spread out to dry. They have less preen oil than other birds, so their feathers can get soaked rather than shedding water like a duck’s. However, having wet feathers make it easier for cormorants to hunt underwater with agility and speed.

Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula)
No Baltimore based nature / bird photo collection would be authentic without flame-orange and black Baltimore Oriole (blackbird family). I am thrilled to add these pictures to my collection. Interestingly, this bird received its name from the fact that the male’s colors resemble those on the coat-of-arms of Lord Baltimore (Cecil Calvert, Second Baron Baltimore, Proprietor of the Maryland colony).
